Welcome to Harper Elementary School’s website. Harper is a K-5 school with approximately 500 enthusiastic boys and girls located at 21 S. Alvord Blvd., in Evansville, IN. Harper is a part of the BEST (Bosse Exemplary School Team) District. Our students move on to Washington and Bosse High School. The other schools in the Bosse district are Dexter, Culver, Glenwood, and Lodge.
Harper was built in 1950 and had the largest playground in the city with many afterschool programs. The tradition of afterschool programs is continuing with the acquisition of a physical education grant with St. Mary’s Foundation and other EVSC schools. We’re excited to be able to offer afterschool programs for all ages during the year. Harper works with the University of Evansville, Methodist Temple, University of Southern Indiana, Girl Scouts, and parents to provide afterschool programs for students. Harper is always looking for ways to expand our programs.
High expectations are set for all students both academically and behaviorally. Our gifted and talented students are clustered within the classroom, and we strive to ensure all students are making academic progress yearly. FOSS (Full Option Science System) science is used at all grade levels. This is a hands on approach to science and our students are engaged and excited about science. A 90 minute reading block is implemented in our classrooms with centers focused on the needs of students. Math is taught for at least an hour daily. Intervention groups are utilized for students who haven’t mastered the standards for their grade level.
Parents and community partners are an important link to our “family”. The Harper parents provide many resources for our school. The parents are willing to do many things for the students and staff at Harper. The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) works with the faculty to provide additional resources for our classrooms. They also coordinate community projects such as collection of pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, monthly family “eat out” nights, Family Fun Nights, supporting the PTA Clothing Bank, popping popcorn, and assisting in any other areas needed.
Our focus at Harper is on student achievement. We work to take students to “higher heights”.
