Courtyard Dedication: Engineering a Gazebo

Kevin Niehaus, Reitz High School senior, former Cynthia Heights student, and member of Boy Scout Troop 374, recently completed his Eagle Scout Service Project. For his project, Kevin built a gazebo and made other improvements to the Cynthia Heights Elementary School courtyard. The newly improved courtyard was dedicated October 19, 2010 with students, faculty, family and friends in attendance.

Kevin wanted his project to be meaningful, lasting, and something that allowed him to give back to the community that helped shape him into the person he is today. As a former Cynthia Heights student, Kevin met with principal Lee Ann Shields, and it was decided to add a gazebo with seating in the school's courtyard to be available for use as an outdoor learning space.

Kevin started his project in February 2010 with fundraising, construction of the gazebo began in July, and the painting and landscaping were completed in October. With generous donations from the Cynthia Heights PTA and some Cynthia Heights families, along with construction help from fellow scouts and their dads, the project became a reality. Kevin hopes the students and staff will enjoy their newly improved courtyard for many years to come.

Mrs. Shields said, “Cynthia Heights is thrilled to accept this wonderful gazebo and it will be used by students, teachers, and families for many years to come!”
