Mrs. Reynolds

Welcome to the School Guidance Counselor website. Through the website I’ll try to keep you up to date on the Counseling program here at West Terrace. As I run across exciting research or a great new book, I’ll share those with you. Keep in mind I have a pretty good sized library of books that I am happy to share with you. So just stop by. Sometimes a parent is faced with an issue that just has them stumped. If that is the case, give me a call and I’ll share any info I have and will be glad to do a little research on the internet to help. If you need referral to a community agency, don’t hesitate to call or stop by. There are times during life we are faced with difficult situations such as divorce, death in the family, long term illness, unemployment. Sometimes we just don’t know where to turn and are stuck. Give me a call. I am familiar with many community agencies and the services they offer. I am a pretty good listener and maybe I can get you “unstuck”.

Let me tell you a little about the Counseling program with the children. My program is a developmental counseling program. That means I work with kids at the appropriate level. The program is proactive in that I teach children to make sound, thoughtful decisions. If we teach good decision making skills, then we’re going to have far fewer behavior problems. I visit K-2nd grade regularly and present character education-type stories often dealing with friendship, respect, honesty, cooperation, persistence etc. At the start of school I like to work on Stranger Awareness, Bus Safety, and Goal-setting. In addition to the classroom guidance, I also have group counseling in areas such as anger control, friendship skills, divorce, study skills, and grief . Some children just need to check with me occasionally to keep on track. You’d be surprised……the kids know when they need to stop by and just talk for a few minutes. Many kids just visit with me a few minutes during recess and then can go on and have a very successful day.

One other component of the School Counseling program is EIT……that stands for Educational Intervention Team. For children who struggle academically or behaviorally, EIT is a way to brainstorm interventions in the classroom to help those children become successful students. If an evaluation by the School Psychologist is necessary, I can provide guidelines for that as well.

This summer I completed a class called BASIC...that stands for Behavioral, Academic, and Social Interventions for the Classroom.  In the class I used a book entitled You Can Handle Them All by DeBruyn and Larson.  This is a great resource for teachers working with struggling students.  It also has some great ideas for parents to implement at home.  You may certainly borrow this book.
