Central High School is the oldest, free, public high school west of the Allegheny Mountains in continuous operation. It was established in 1854 as Evansville High School. The name was changed to Central in 1918 when Reitz was opened on a coal mine hill on Evansville's Westside. Our tradition is a proud, unbroken one. We chose the music of the University of Minnesota's Rouser for our school song and the music of the Washington and Lee for our fight song. Our bear mascot symbolizes strength and ferociousness, which is common among bears. Few schools enjoy our unique school colors of Brown and Gold.
