What is the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program?
Purpose: To provide educational ,safe and engaging activities for students during the after school hours. Goals: The goals of the program are to have the school open during out-of school hours to children, parents and the community so the school becomes the community center. This will give youth an opportunity to be in a safe, healthy, and drug-free environment.
What types of programs are being offered after school?
Enrichment Programs: These programs include academic and enrichment type programs that will enhance and extends students' classroom learning. Examples include: tutoring, computer classes, book clubs, library time, etc. Recreational Programs: These programs include recreational and fine arts related activities fostering healthy lifestyles. Examples include: choir, arts & crafts, African American Choral Ensemble, bowling, walking & exercise club, team sports, etc.
Drug/ Alcohol Prevention Programs:
These programs include drug awareness and prevention programs sponsored by the Indiana Division of Mental Health, Youth Services Bureau, Youth First Foundation, and Boy & Girls Club. Family/Community Programs: These programs include activities for families and the community. Examples include: Story times, Family Book Club, Family Night Out, School Social Workers, etc.
Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation has ten schools that are a part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. They are Cedar Hall Elementary, Culver Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Lodge Elementary, Dexter Elementary, Delaware Elementary, Howard Roosa Elementary, Evans Middle School, Glenwood Middle School, and Harwood Middle School. Funding is provided through a grant from the United States Department of Education.
