If your child becomes ill, he/she must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Students with these illnesses will need to be cleared by the school nurse before returning to school.
If you child has diarrhea or vomiting, he/she must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. If you have any question about whether or not to keep your child home, please contact Ms. Underwood at 477-6109.
H1N1/Seasonal Flu Information
Any influenza virus can be spread easily from person to person so we, as a community, need to take some simple steps to reduce the spread of the seasonal flu as well as the H1N1 virus.
Here's what you can do to help:
•Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (60% or more alcohol).
•Do not share personal items like food, drinks, or utensils.
•Cover your coughs and sneezes by using a tissue or the inside of your elbow or sleeve.
•Know the signs and symptoms of the flu.
•Fever of 100ºF or greater
•Cough
•Sore throat
•Runny or stuffy nose
•Body aches
•Headache
•Feeling very tired
•Vomiting or diarrhea may accompany the H1N1 virus.
•Keep sick children home for at least 24 hours AFTER they no longer have fever WITHOUT using fever-reducing drugs. This will reduce the number of people who get infected and is a good rule for adults to follow, too.
•Do not send children to school if they are sick.
•Please do not give your child a fever-reducing medicine and send them to school. They are still contagious.
•If your child has fever at night but does not have fever in the morning, they are still considered sick. Viral infections will produce a fever in the late afternoon and into the evening. The fever usually is gone in the morning, but it reappears the next afternoon or evening.
We greatly appreciate your help with this matter! Working together, we can help our children stay healthy!
Medications At School
Requirements for administering medication to students by school personnel are as follows:
1. The prescribed medication MUST be in the original container bearing the original pharmacy label with the directions from the physician, name of the medication, date and student's name. The non-prescription (over-the-counter) medication MUST be in the original container. Written instructions from the parent/guardian must accompany any medication to be given at school.
2. The parent or guardian MUST sign an Authorization for Administering Medication by School Personnell form provided by the nurse. This will be kept on file in the Nurse's Office.
3. New state law prohibits children carrying medications to school. An adult must deliver medications to the Nurse's Office. Bus transportation provides an envelope for children's medication that is handed to the driver for transport.
Emergency Calls
These cards are sent home on the first day of school each year, for the praent/guardian to complete, sign and return to school on the second school day. This information provides a link between the school and the parent/guardian in the event of an illness or ememgency. Remember to contact the Nurse immediately if any information on your emergency card changes during the school year. DO NOT list non-custodial parents or other adults on this card who are not to have contact with your child.
Vision Screening
A vision screening is performed for students in grades 1st, 3rd, and newly enrolled students. Parents or teachers may request an additional vision screening if visual difficulties are suspected.
Hearing Screening
All students in grades 1 and 4 have their hearing checked with an Audiometer. This screening is available for students displaying hearing difficulties on a referral basis. Our Kindergarten students are tests as an extra service to our families as the State does not require that Kindergarten students have a hearing screening.
Dental Health
Each year, the St. Mary's Mobile Dental Clinic visits Vogel School. If you would like your child to visit the Mobile Dental Clinic please see Ms. Underwood in the Nurse's Office.
