Elementary Curriculum

At the EVSC, we have experienced teachers who make every child feel safe and cared for from day one. Our curriculum balances early reading skills with the social confidence students need to make new friends.
Elementary school serves as a time for students to develop the foundational skills such as reading and writing that they will need to be successful as they advance through school. In addition to comprehensive academics such as reading, math and science, students also receive instruction in music, art, gym, technology and more.

English/Language Arts
Foundations of Reading (K-2)
Reading Foundations - The EVSC is committed to using literacy instruction that aligns to the science of reading, including daily systematic instruction on the core foundations of phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary. EVSC has invested in LETRS training for primary teachers, Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling. The UFLI Curriculum, published by the University of Florida Literacy Institute, is provided to teachers and students in grades K-2.
Language Arts (K-8)
EL Education, published by Open Up Resources, is a comprehensive, standards-based literacy program that engages teachers and students through compelling, real-world content. EL Education is based in the science of reading, utilizes authentic, complex texts, incorporates science and social studies, and connects reading, thinking, talking, and writing.

High Ability
The William & Mary Center for Gifted Education Language Arts units have been aligned to national standards within each grade level, as well as two to three grades above the grade level. In addition to addressing the regular language arts standards, the William & Mary language arts curricula also focus on analyzing and interpreting literature, research skills, vocabulary development and analysis, and persuasive writing.
The language arts units incorporate advanced content-based thinking models such as a literature web and a vocabulary web to help students understand and analyze text and words. Students are introduced to the literature web early in each unit.
Remediation/ Interventions
95% Blueprint for Comprehension, 95 Percent GroupTM: Direct, explicit, and systematic instruction for students in grades 3-6 that focuses on comprehension processes. An intervention tool designed for use in small groups and beyond, with students who are capable readers, but need support in making meaning from texts for true comprehension.
Exact Path, Edmentum: A digital program that provides individualized learning paths for K-12 students in reading and math aligned to state standards and skills. This program provides supplemental instruction to students who need intervention, remediation, or acceleration.
IXL Learning: IXL provides online supplemental curriculum support for intervention, remediation, and enrichment of core content in reading and mathematics.
Just Words, Wilson Language Training: This highly explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling program is for students in grades 4–12 and adults who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention.
UFLI, University of Florida Literacy Institute: A direct, explicit, structured, sequential, cumulative, and systematic way to teach foundational literacy using principles of the Science of Reading.
Math
Math K-8
Eureka Math Squared by Great Minds is designed to ensure that students move beyond rote memorization to build enduring math knowledge through the intentional integration of digital resources and a focused approach to encouraging student discourse. It includes consistent math models, rigor to support the productive struggle, and coherence across lessons, modules, and grades.

High Ability
Project M2 (grades 1-2): Mentoring Young Mathematicians is a series of curriculum units designed for grades K-2 to foster inquiry and engage students in critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication activities. Project M² units focus on “in-depth” mathematics using research-based practices and standards in mathematics education and early childhood education. Levels 1 and 2 focus on geometry, measurement, and numbers. Students are led to new learning environments where they can develop reasoning and communication skills related to each area of emphasis.
Project M3 (grades 3-5): Mentoring Mathematical Minds is a series of curriculum units developed to motivate and challenge mathematically talented students at the elementary level. Project M3 has long been recognized as one of the nation’s top programs in gifted mathematics education. The curriculum focuses on critical and creative problem-solving and reasoning. Students are engaged through investigations, projects, and simulations.
Remediation/ Interventions
Exact Path, Edmentum: A digital program that provides individualized learning paths for K-12 students in reading and math aligned to state standards and skills. This program provides supplemental instruction to students who need intervention, remediation, or acceleration.
Georgia Numeracy, Georgia Department of Education: The Georgia Numeracy Project is an evidence-based resource to help students build a solid foundation in numeracy. The Georgia Numeracy Project is focused on developing students' understanding of numbers and their ability to use numbers to solve problems. Students may solve number problems by counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, or any combination of these operations. Students should develop strategies that support their use of these operations in real-world and mathematical problems.
Math Catalyst, Eureka Math Squared (Pilot Schools only): Math Catalyst is a supplemental instructional resource designed to be used within MTSS to maximize student achievement in mathematics. Math Catalyst provides support for Tier 2 and 3 instruction. There are seven strands K-5: Early Numeracy, Place Value, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Fractions as Numbers. Each strand is composed of a progression of concepts. The adaptive and systematic design of materials is used to build knowledge through a carefully sequenced set of objectives for each concept. Concepts are structured to build upon one another and across grade levels.
IXL Learning: IXL provides online supplemental curriculum support for intervention, remediation, and enrichment of core content in reading and mathematics.
Social Studies
Scott Foresman
Locally Created Curriculum
Scott Foresman Social Studies class sets are provided. This standards-based curriculum engages students by offering multiple learning methods that challenge students to think critically about key concepts. Titles include All Together, People & Places, Communities, Indiana History and the United States. NewsELA and Epic! are used to supplement the content to further align lessons with the Indiana State Academic Standards.

Science
Mystery Science, Discovery Education
Mystery Science, published by Discovery Education, is offered in grades K-5. This online interactive program includes the hook, visuals, and activities for students to learn about and participate in hands-on activities as they learn about science. Grades 2-5 also have access to NewsELA which offers leveled articles for students to read and enhance their content knowledge and content literacy skills.
