IREAD-3

The image depicts the logo for the "READ-3" program, which is focused on assessing student readiness. The logo features the text "READ-3" in large letters, with a star-filled background and a flame-like icon in the foreground.

Students who can read by the end of third grade are more likely to be successful in their future endeavors, making it extremely important that schools have information regarding a student’s reading ability as early as possible.

In March, students in grades two through six who have yet to take or pass will participate in the IREAD (Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination) assessment. This assessment measures foundational reading skills: phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Scores from this assessment highlight how students are performing in their reading skills, and help schools target those students who may not yet be proficient in reading for reading remediation or intervention.

Following the end of each testing window, parents will be notified when their student’s test scores are available to view in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Students must obtain a score of 446 or higher to “pass” this assessment.

What happens if my child does not pass IREAD?

Indiana Code 20-32-8.5-2 requires any student who has not yet taken or passed IREAD to take it at the next opportunity offered, until they can receive a passing score or are promoted to grade seven. Students that did not pass in the spring will have a second opportunity to take IREAD in the summer (May-June).

Additionally, Indiana Code requires that third grade students repeat third grade if they do not pass IREAD. However, some third grade students may be exempted from this requirement if they:

  • Were previously retained in third grade.
  • Were previously retained more than once during Kindergarten, grade one, or grade two.
  • Have an intellectual disability or the Case Conference Committee determines that promotion is appropriate.
  • Have received English Learner services for fewer than two years and the Conference Committee determines that promotion is appropriate.
  • Have received “At” or or “Above” proficiency on ILEARN Mathematics.
